Author announcement – T S Mercer

Venture Press is thrilled to introduce T S Mercer’s dystopian novel Jail for the Damned.

Jail for the Damned

A debut novel, Jail for the Damned is a New Adult thriller with romantic elements, which follows tough-girl Claudi Drive and her entourage of criminal friends, in their attempts to escape Newton Supermax – a prison in a remote, unknown location, which is run entirely by convicts.

TS Mercer has worked in a maximum security jail and alongside a TV illusionist – not at the same time, it must be pointed out. When not writing scripts and articles Mercer spends as much time as possible in a house that occupies a sliver of land between the rolling ocean and some of the most beautiful mountains on Earth.

Clark is an established science fiction and horror novelist from Doncaster, and is known for titles such as Nailed by the Heart, The Night of the Triffids and his Vampyrrhic series. Clark claims to be raised in a family of storytellers – with family legends telling of a stolen human skull buried beneath their garage. In his early teens he sold his first story to a radio station, but the author’s career really started with a job writing stories for fanzines like Back Brain Recluse, which published his first collection of stories – Blood and Grit – in 1990. In 2002 Clark won the British Fantasy Award for best short story, Goblin City Lights, and best novel for The Night of the Triffids, and in 2011 he won the British Fantasy Award for best novella for Humpty’s Bones. He now lives with his wife and two children, where he pursues his full-time literary career.

Colossus

Author announcement – D F Jones

Venture Press is very excited to bring D. F. Jones’s novels Colossus (1966) and Bound in Time (1982) to eBook readers in September 2015.

Bound in Time

Dennis Feltham Jones was a British Science Fiction author; he was a Naval Commander in World War II, and lived in Cornwall until his death in 1981. His writings dealt with the ongoing battle – both physical and philosophical – between man and machine. He is perhaps most famous for his Colossus series, which was translated to the big screen in 1970 for the film Colossus: The Forbin Project, which was well received by critics, and was nominated for a Hugo Award in 1971. These novels follow the story of a supercomputer designed to assume control of the US Naval Academy’s nuclear defence systems. This supercomputer – the eponymous ‘Colossus’ – exceeds scientists’ expectations of its capabilities and soon compromises US military secrecy with its USSR counterpart, ‘Guardian’, ultimately subjugating its creators with the threat of nuclear war. Bound in Time, another novel by Dennis Feltham Jones to be published by Venture Press, deals with similarly apprehensive attitudes towards technological advances like time travel, and explores a “chilling fight for survival in worlds unknown and years unborn”.

Also to be published by Venture Press will be The Fall of the Colossus (1974), Colossus and the Crab (1977) and Earth Has Been Found (1979).

Author announcement – Mary Corran

Venture Press is very pleased to announce our latest book, Imperial Light by Mary Corran.

Imperial Light

Corran was born the younger daughter of an art historian and an Aegean Archeologist, which may explain the influence of Greek culture and history on her fantasy novels. Instead of pursuing an academic career, she decided to be a child of the seventies and travel overland to India and back. The need to develop a career sent her back to university to read History at Oxford, and marry a fellow student. After working in the City as an oil analyst for ten years, Mary went on to write the fantasy trilogy Imperial LightDarkfell and Fate, which Venture Press will be publishing. Also available, a memoir chronicling her years of illness, Wasteland. She currently lives in Eastbourne, United Kingdom, where she is writing a new novel.

Author announcement – Angus MacVicar

Venture Press is extremely proud to present Angus MacVicar’s The Lost Planet (1953).

The Lost Planet

MacVicar was an accomplished Scottish author, screenwriter and playwright who published work in a variety of genres. Earlier in his career he was known for his crime thrillers and autobiographies, but his early writing was interrupted by his service as a captain in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. As a result, most of his juvenile science fiction was not published until after World War II. It was then that his ‘Lost Planet’ series became extremely popular, with MacVicar himself adapting the stories as TV and radio serials.

Soon to be published by Venture Press will be seven more books from this author, including five more from the ‘Lost Planet’ series – Return to the Lost Planet (1954), Secret of the Lost Planet (1955), Red Fire on the Lost Planet (1959), Peril on the Lost Planet (1960) and Space Agent from the Lost Planet (1961). We also have Space Agent and the Isles of Fire (1962) and Space Agent and the Ancient Peril (1964) coming soon.
